2007 was hailed as one of the greatest for video games ever. It saw the release of such blockbusters as Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, The Orange Box (which included Portal), Call of Duty 4, Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock and Halo 3.
2008 was no less incredible with greats such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Gears of War 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, No More Heroes, Wii Fit, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Fable 2, Little Big Planet, Left 4 Dead, Spore and Fallout 3 as well as some others such as Braid, Castle Crashers and Lost Winds.
2009 has plenty for gamers the world over to get excited about but what gets you most excited? There's plenty on the way to fit everyone's tastes and this short list obviously can't reflect everything that's on the way so I made a couple of rules.
Downloadable content was taken away with the exception of GTA IV: The Lost and Damned. The reason for this was because this DLC is more an expansion, featuring a robust amount of content reportedly one third the length of the main GTA IV storyline.
I also decided to leave out titles which are as likely to be released in 2010 as they are in 2009. This includes games like Splinter Cell: Conviction, Assassin's Creed 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and Alan Wake.
The final omission was games released only in one territory this year. For example, Chrono Trigger DS is released in Europe in 2009 but is already avaliable elsewhere. Final Fantasy XIII is set for release this year but only in Japan, striking it from the list.
You get the idea.
So, here are eight titles for you to choose from. One of these rings your bell more than the others so let us know which one. Don't be afraid to tell us why you chose what you chose either. Let us know what else you look forward to this year that isn't on the list.
2007 was great. 2008 was amazing. Let's hope 2009 goes on to be unbelievable.
